Getting SIRIUS about STEM Education Reform: Transforming Learning Through Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences

Ever considered transforming your undergraduate curriculum to focus on hands-on course-based research or authentic learning experiences centered around a local river? Dr. Kelly McDonald showcases how the SIRIUS Project at Sacramento State Biology successfully integrated the American River theme into their Biology major labs. They extended this initiative by collaborating with community colleges within the watershed, creating a truly immersive learning environment.

Hosting Kelly and leveraging her presentation as a springboard for discussions on hands-on learning in the James River watershed was a remarkable experience. Over multiple events, we engaged with over 50 participants from six universities and various community stakeholders within the watershed. The opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals passionate about hands-on freshwater education fostered a sense of community and provided the inspiration I was seeking.
