Joe Cutler shares National Geographic expedition to survey Gabon's Ogooue River, Africa's Last Wild River.

Please consider joining us for a special river-focused VCU ENVS Careers & Conversations hour with National Geographic Young Explorer Joe Cutler on Friday, Feb. 26th, 11am-12pm Eastern time.

[Update 3/24 - Here is the full recording of Joe's interview - https://youtu.be/VTUHnN4rthk]

We recruited Joe for this series because we wanted to inspire our students - especially our river studies and leadership students -  to dream big.  As a Nat Geo young explorer, Joe is probably not much older than some of them.

Joe will share about his recent Ogooue Megatransect project

In 2020, an international team of explorers, scientists, and storytellers will attempt a first descent of the Ogooué River in Gabon. Led by National Geographic Explorer Joe Cutler, our team will paddle 1,000 kilometers down the Ogooué River, traversing the entire country of Gabon in inflatable rafts. The team will survey biodiversity, ecosystem health and share stories from the river. One of the last remaining wild rivers, the Ogooué is home to endangered manatees, freshwater turtles, crocodiles, hippopotamus and hundreds of fish species – many of which are only found in the Ogooué drainage. Our goal is to explore, survey and document the Ogooué, one of earth’s last wild rivers.
